Nestled on the picturesque banks of Walton on Thames in Surrey, Rosewell’s Boathouse, or more commonly known as Walton Marina, stands as a testament to the enduring allure of waterways and the rich history they carry. This site has witnessed countless tales of adventure, leisure, and the transformation of the river from a bustling industrial artery to a recreational haven. In this article, we will embark on a journey through time to explore the fascinating history of Walton Marina.

In the Beginning

The history of Walton on Thames can be traced back to the 18th century when the river was a vital transport route for goods flowing between London and other parts of the country. This area, known for its fertile soil and agricultural produce, was strategically important for transportation.

The construction of Sunbury locks and weir in the late 18th century marked the beginning of the transformation of this part of the Thames into an easily navigable waterway.

During this time, the construction of Rosewells Boathouse’ began, aptly named after the owners the Rosewell family who were specialists in the building of punts and skiffs. Nestled between the river and natural back water which would later form the marina, the large wooden Thames-side boathouse boasted a full-length balcony from its upper mezzanine floor, ample ground for space for boat building and direct access slips into the river.

The Rise of Leisure Boating

As the 19th century unfolded, the Industrial Revolution began to wane, and a new era of leisure and recreation emerged. The allure of the Thames as a getaway destination grew, and the region witnessed an influx of pleasure boats and rowing clubs. Rosewells Boathouse, which was now renamed Eastwoods, appealed to this social adaption, particularly because it its scenic beauty and convenient location. It began to cater to the recreational needs of the rapidly growing boating demand. Come the early 1950s, river side motorboat moorings were introduced.

As boating popularity increased, it was clear there was a need for additional moorings. In the 1960’s, the Cook family took over the boathouse, and immediately took to work piling and dredging to create 150 new water berths. This was when Walton Marina was born, and the development would become one the first marinas on the River Thames to utilise the unused natural backwater behind.

Adapting to the Times

The latter half of the 20th century saw continued modernisation at Walton Marina. Technological advancements transformed the boating experience, and the marina upgraded its infrastructure, offering improved moorings, boat maintenance services, and amenities to cater to a diverse clientele of boating enthusiasts.

Tingdene Marinas took over the site in 2008, and since then Walton Marina has transformed into much more than a boating facility; it serves as a vibrant community hub, hosting events such as open days, boat sales weekends, and social gatherings for like-minded Thames boaters, and is home to many marine-based businesses. It has become a place where residents and visitors alike can take part in exciting water-based activities, or simply sit back and take in the rare but much needed tranquil atmosphere, all while being nestled into a busy city.

Walton Marina’s history is a testament to the dynamic interplay of the industry, leisure, and community generously scattered along the banks of the River Thames. From its humble origins as a traditional boathouse to its current status as a thriving marina and community hub, the marina has adapted to suit the times, while retaining its connection to the river’s rich heritage.
