How to De-Winterise Your Boat

17 April 2025

Set off for success right from the start.

As the weather warms up and the sun makes a long-awaited appearance, now is the perfect time for you to get your boat prepared for the season ahead.

We have out together a step-by-step guide to help you get your boat ready for the water:

Check the Battery

  • Inspect the Battery: If you removed the battery for storage over the winter, check it for any signs of damage or corrosion, and clean the terminals with a wire brush if required.
  • Charge or Replace the Battery: Ensure your battery is fully charged. If it doesn’t hold a charge or shows signs of deterioration, consider replacing it.

Inspect and Clean the Hull

  • Remove the Cover: Start by taking off any winter covers you used to protect your boat from the elements and check for any damage so you can repair it ahead of next winter.
  • Clean the Hull: Give the boat’s hull a thorough cleaning to remove any dirt or algae that may have accumulated during the winter months. Use a soft brush and cleaning products appropriate for your boat to avoid damaging the finish or contact your local boat cleaner to give a professional, safe clean.

Check and Replace Fluids

  • Engine Oil and Filter: Change the engine oil and replace the oil filter if you didn’t do so before winterising. Old oil can become thick and cause engine issues, so a change of oil is crucial for smooth operation.
  • Fuel System: If you topped up your fuel tank with stabiliser before storing, check the fuel lines for any leaks or cracks. If you didn’t add stabiliser, you may need to treat the fuel to avoid any issues with the carburettor or fuel injectors.
  • Coolant: Inspect the coolant levels and top up or replace as necessary

Inspect the Propeller

  • Check for Damage: Inspect the propeller for any dings, cracks, or other signs of wear. A damaged propeller can affect performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Clean and Lubricate: Clean the propeller shaft and apply lubricant to prevent rust or corrosion. Make sure the propeller is securely attached before heading out on the water.

Inspect the Steering and Controls

  • Steering Mechanism: Check the steering cables or hydraulic system for signs of wear or corrosion and lubricate moving parts to ensure smooth operation.
  • Throttle and Shifting: Check the throttle and shift controls for proper functioning. Ensure that the cables are lubricated and move freely.

Check the Water Pump and Cooling System

  • Water Pump Impeller: Inspect the impeller for wear and tear. The impeller is essential for drawing water into the engine to keep it cool, so if there are signs of damage, replace before use.
  • Flush the Engine: If your boat has a closed cooling system, flush it out with fresh water to remove any debris, antifreeze, or contaminants left from the winter.

Inspect the Electrical System

  • Test All Lights: Make sure all lights, including navigation lights, docking lights, and interior lights, are in good working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out.
  • Check Wiring: Inspect the electrical system for any loose connections, frayed wires, or signs of corrosion. Ensure all wires are secure and protected from moisture.
  • Inspect the Bilge Pump: Test the bilge pump to make sure it’s working. It’s a critical safety feature, especially in the event of a leak or unexpected water intake.

Inspect Safety Equipment

  • Life Jackets: Check all life jackets for any wear and tear. Make sure they are in good condition, safely stored, and easily accessible.
  • Fire and First Aid Kits: Ensure that your fire extinguishers, and first aid kit are all intact and not expired. Replace any expired or damaged items.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Inspect fire extinguishers for proper pressure and expiration dates. Ensure they are easy to access and properly mounted.

Assess the Boat on the Water

  • Once all your inspections and maintenance tasks are complete, take the boat out for a short trial run. This will allow you to make sure everything is functioning properly and to address any issues that may arise. Pay attention to the engine’s performance, steering, and navigation systems.

Restock and Organize

  • Stock Up: Ensure you have enough fuel, snacks, water, and other essentials onboard for your first few outings.
  • Organise Essentials: Organize and clean the boat’s storage compartments, ensuring that safety equipment, tools, and personal items are safely stored and easy to access.

De-winterising your boat can seem like a big task, especially if new to boating, but it’s an essential part of getting your boat ready for the season and will ensure that your boat is in top condition for a safe and enjoyable summer on the water.
